What is Umami? Ponder the oyster. A martini. Tom yum. Carne asada. Fleur de sel. All umami. Don't try to define it! Just surrender to the addiction; savor the flavor implosion.

ABOUT

Umami (うまみ) is one of the five basic principles of taste, along with sweet, sour, bitter and salty. Some call it savoriness or roundness but WTF does that mean? Trying to define the term is futile– it’s just the gut instinct you have when something tastes as good as… SEX! Consider it a flavor implosion.

Here at Umamimart, we love oysters, noodles, cocktails, pizza and ice cream. From Tokyo to San Francisco, NYC to Madrid, we report on the latest food obsessions, from all over the map. Be forewarned that we are at times elusive, just like umami.

We all gotta eat though– so what’s the big friggin’ deal, right?! Let there be umami in everything you put in your mouth, and everything you read here.
