The Great British Tea Taste-Off

by Mel

I am a tea-drinker to the core. Coffee is just not my thing. I have one-night stands with it on the weekend, but I’m more or less in a committed relationship with tea.

So, I started out drinking the weak tea stuff – Lipton, Twinnings. For years. And then I was introduced to PG Tips. Since then, it has become my morning staple. It’s strong and flavorful and everything you need to wake up. It’s not what you would think of a normal tea – all dainty and mom-like. This stuff is strong. It’s British and they don’t eff around. So I go on with my life happily thinking that PG Tips will never be replaced by something better. But, I did finally put it to the test with another British tea.

Oh, the horror!!!!!

Yorkshire Gold (GOLD – I was already intimidated by its label – kind of like when you find out your BF’s ex-girlfriend is hotter than you are) tea was also recommended to me several months ago, so I did a little taste comparison this week – for three days. Although still good and as strong, it doesn’t seem to have the depth of flavor that PG Tips does. Not that PG Tips has a lot of flavor, it just has some complexity there that Yorkshire doesn’t. And Yorkshire seems a bit more tart. So, I am still a PG Tips girl 100% and I will always wake up in the morning with it, and never look back.

Anyone else have an opinion on this?

So great to read about PG Tips love. I fell in love with PG Tips in 2003 when I was working on a B-movie (horror, leading man – Eric Roberts). PG Tips was always there on the craft services table. Although I couldn’t deal with my life, knowing that I had to usher Eric Roberts from make-up to set, PG Tips was definitely a reason not to prepare a noose.

I drink a cup of strong PG Tips every morning (I actually prefer Ceylon tea straight from Sri Lanka drunk plain without milk, but the water doesn’t do it justice here in London). Only thing that will wake me up. However, I watched a programme about the best builders’ tea (the Brits like to know this stuff and builders are the expert in strong milky tea) and I think the top spot was taken by Sainsbury’s (big UK supermarket) Red Label tea. Haven’t tried that yet, but I also like Tesco’s (another UK supermarket) Finest tea. However, most people drink either PG Tips or Tetley here. What a great post!

And Yoko, you met Eric Roberts? Scary…

Wauw, I have to find PG Tips here in Copenhagen, it must be available since London isn’t that far away.
The newest hit here is organic ginger-liqurice-pepper tea. Maybe worth a post, it’s very weird.

Yoko – I used to phantasize about Brandon and his dad getting it on. Hot!
I always thought Eric Roberts was a modest, nice guy – until you told me about his behavoir on set.
