Letter From The Editor: Sloth Season

by Kayoko

Sloth: Disinclination to work, or exert yourself.*

Jesus considers it a deadly sin, but we all deserve to lay low once in a while, don’t we? And every year, people around the world seem to choose the entire month of August to be lazy. Cubicle junkies in the U.S. get Fridays off; New Yorkers spend all their free time in the Hamptons; the Obon festival in Japan gives people a week off to drink in honor of their ancestry (nice one); and entire countries in Europe like Italy and Spain practically shut down altogether and migrate to the beach.

Yes, August is sloth season. It’s the unbearable heat (ok, totally NOT HOT here in the Bay Area, btw), coupled with the idea that no one else is working anyway. It’s a month devoted to leaving work early, high liquid (ehem, alcohol) intake, barbecues with friends and family, and staying out all night without having to wear a sweater. Hell, maybe we don’t even need shirts.

So you’ll get a lot of posts here this month on the theme of slothfulness. We’re big on this subject here as it is, but let’s see if we can kick it up a notch (if that’s even possible). Umamimart HQ is not shutting down by any means, but we’re definitely gonna write about foodstuffs that are EASY. No muss, no fuss.

I myself am escaping to get my beach time in San Diego this week, and I know my Umamimart colleagues will just be keeping it easy… like Sunday morning. (How AWESOME is this video?)

Happy Sloth Season! August rocks!

*The definition, verbatim, comes from here.

I think this post should have come with a picture of Sloth from Goonies. Loved it!
