Packaging Whore: Cornichons, Paris Style

Here’s something awesome that Matt brought back for me from his jaunt in Paris. Looks like just an ordinary jar of cornichons (aka the Gherkin), right? Think again.

When you open it up, there is this awesome stick floating in the middle of the jar. What is it for? To pick up the remaining cornichons at the bottom of the jar, when there are only a few left.

You see, the stick is connected to this flat piece of plastic at the base of the jar- when you pull it up, it rises. If you look at the above pic, it’s that dark green piece at the bottom there.

Here is me demonstrating- pics don’t really do it justice since there are still many cornichons left, but isn’t it genius!?!?!?!

    Omg your friend is crazy, can you imagine if that broke in your luggage? You would smell like vinegar forever! Is the Maille cornichon packagin different here? I don’t know because I haven’t bought them here in awhile…omg when I was in Geneva I used to eat a jar of those in like two days!

    i’ve never seen Maille cornichons here, have you? only the mustard, which is actually my fave mustard on the US market.

    wiki calls the gherkin a different “race” of the cucumber. isn’t that strange?

    yeah dude it would be pretty bad if that jar broke… ha.

    Also, there’s little nubs along the stick that you can set on the lip of the jar. So if you’re only half way through you can still easily reach in. :)

    You can get them in the States, I live in SE Michigan I can get them at a few different stores. The packaging is the same too.

    Effectivement, ça fait plus de 15 ans que ce genre de pot de cornichons existe.

    C’est dingue de que vous découvriez ça en 2009!!!

    Al Jaffe “invented” this in MAD magazine around 30 years ago! (Only, it was an olive jar.)

    ha- i didn’t mean to imply this was anything new in the world, just that i had only recently discovered it.

    it really is brilliant, and i especially love that it’s not a device for anything over-the-top or pretentious. instead, it’s for something as simple as pickles.

    When I was at my husband’s family reunion in Oregon this summer, I used this vintage avocado green Tupperware “Pick-a-Deli” for the first time. Our host’s kitchen was straight out of 1964. I love one-purpose gadgets!
