Making Granola

by Chuchoter

I just wanted to share this recipe for great granola! I just made 2 batches for us to take camping. It is super easy for breakfast; just add some water and powdered milk and you’ve got a meal.

I use a recipe that is a combination of Megan’s Granola from All recipes and whatever looks good at the grocery store, some ideas – sun flower seeds, walnuts, flax seeds, coconut, dried apricots. Be sure to get extra $$ savings by buying your items bulk. If you are really on a budget, ignore the organic options, it’ll save you a few dollars per pound. I know that Topp’s in Williamsburg has a bulk section (but the hours are a little spotty). In the bay area there is always the Country Cheese in Berkeley.

Here is a picture of everything you will need

Mix the dry ingredients together (minus the cranberries and apricots!! I always forget to separate them out and they dry up in the oven). Melt the sugar and the wet ingredients together and then pour over the dry. Spread it out on a cookie sheet and cook for 20 minutes +/- at 350. If you make a lot, use multiple baking sheets so that the layer isn’t too thick. Be sure to check it and mix it around to even out the toasting. I find that once it starts to toast it happens really fast, so stay close once this starts happening (this one is a little burnt…).

Viola!! You’ve got home made granola. We actually are going to continue having this around beyond camping. My husband LOVES it and has it with fresh fruit and yogurt for breakfast.
